Jodi Buren

SuperWomen Author and Photographer

Program Title: SuperWomen

Jodi Buren is a photographer based in New York City whose editorial clients include The New York Times, Life, Sports Illustrated, Time, and Newsweek. While on assignment for Sports Illustrated working on a story about Donna Lopiano, the women’s athletic director at the University of Texas in Austin, Jodi was amazed by the athletes that she met — tennis players, runners, volleyball players — all playing their sport with passion and joy. Jodi photographed a Lady Longhorns basketball game. Inspired by these young athletes, by their strength, their energy and their sheer love of the game, Jodi began shooting SuperWomen, a vibrant celebration of the American woman athlete. Combining sweeping photographic spreads with first-person reflections, this book pays tribute to the female sports figures-both current competitors and silver-haired veterans-who have risen to the top of their game.

At the podium, Jodi brings the book to life through the pictures and discusses her project, capturing the spirit of the female athletes. Jodi shares the startling candor and honesty of her subjects as they talked about their innermost fears, secret dreams and desires. They shared the stories that told of the personal experiences that led them to where they are today. SuperWomen is a testament to the athletic passion and achievement of women which helps young girls and women visualize the variety of sports.
