From NASCAR to the Boardroom: Leading the Crew To Victory
Jeff L. Hammond is a racing analyst and broadcaster for FOX Sports, FX and the Speed Channel, for NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series programming; and broadcasts race day from the legendary “Hollywood Hotel” with co-host Chris Meyers. Jeff’s career in NASCAR began in 1974 working as a tire changer for Walter Ballard. He eventually moved to the jack man position, becoming one of the best in the business. In 1976, he became the tire changer for Junior Johnson’s legendary race team and would go on to win three Winston Cup Championships with drivers Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip who had taken over the driving responsibilities for the Johnson team in 1981.
At the encouragement of Waltrip, Johnson promoted Jeff to the crew chief position for the start of the 1982 season. This combination of owner Johnson, driver Waltrip and crew chief Hammond would set a new standard of performance in NASCAR. Jeff would orchestrate two NASCAR Winston Cup Championship titles and 43 wins as crew chief, placing him in the record books as one of NASCAR’s all time great crew chiefs.
Jeff currently competes in team roping and calf wrestling on the Southern Rodeo Circuit. In 1973-74, he was a former High School Prep Football All-American Cornerback for North Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC. He went on to play for East Carolina University and Coach Pat Dye in 1975 where he suffered a career ending injury.
